DrxugSafe is a collaborative public-private project to increase community awareness about prescription drug and heroin abuse in Marion County, Oregon. The goal of the project is to mobilize community resources to decrease this type of substance abuse throughout the county.
How do we know we have a problem? In 2012, ten deaths related to heroin overdose in the first eight months of the year (double the number from 2011) prompted public officials to investigate the problem and seek solutions.
Each member of the community has a role to play in stopping the deadly trends related to prescription drug and heroin abuse. Many solutions are simple and could save lives. Have you checked your own medicine cabinet lately?
Many key community partners are involved, including representatives from hospitals, insurance companies, medical and dental providers, social service agencies, school districts, parents, and local nonprofit organizations.
